SYNOPSIS
Lenningrad Nights is the story of a young boy facing his own personal battle in his war torn homeland as he becomes the surrogate father to a prostitute’s baby. The lyrical prose and sharp characterisation mark this as probably the best of the collection with a denouement that sits comfortably with all that has gone before.

Graham Joyce’s “Leningrad Nights” reads like a long-lost urban legend from the Great Patriotic War. Set during the 900-day siege of Leningrad, “Leningrad Nights” is sufficiently grizzly in its depiction of what it takes to survive under such circumstances. It is a story of a young man who finds both poetry and the limits of his own behaviour in the rubble of the dying city.

But down in the cellar of his mansion lies the secret of his success and it’s a close-to-home secret in more ways that one. It’s also a surprisingly nasty secret, and nastily surprising.

SYNOPSIS
New York, the late 1970's. The tribes of punk and disco are at war, and the first casualties have fallen in the Chelsea Hotel. Johnny Pop, a vampire fresh from Europe with a name to make and a thirst to slake, gravitates to the orbit of the grey-faced undead master to the city, Andy Warhol. With Johnny comes a new drug craze, perhaps a new disease and certainly a new communion between the living and the undead. The alternate world of Anno Dracula, The Bloody Red Baron, Judgment Of Tears and Coppola's Dracula is extended here to a new era and a new continent, reimagining Saturday Night Fever as a lust for blood and examining one artist's obsession with things dead but moving.

SYNOPSIS
The first in a series of four linked novellas from PS Publishing. Pete Crowther asked me to try a novella for his PS imprint. I already had a vague story in mind, of a family having to cross a changing and increasingly inimical landscape to reach an estranged family member. That landscape became the British countryside, and the thing threatening everything emerged as the living dead. But I wanted to take this far past the usual zombie-fest. Why can’t grass be living dead, I figured, and trees, and foxes and badgers and anything that was once alive? So, for a while, it was.
The ‘naming of parts’ referred to in the title is the main protagonist’s way of confronting his fears by naming them, analysing them, laying them out to view. After writing the novella I tried this when I visited the dentist. It worked. Sort of. I suppose some fears are beyond naming…

SYNOPSIS
Mid-list writer Daniel Ellis becomes obsessed with the life and work of novelist Vaughan Edwards, who disappeared in mysterious circumstances in 1996. Edwards' novels, freighted with foreboding tragedy and a lyrical sense of loss, echo something in Ellis's own life. His investigations lead Ellis ever deeper into the enigma that lies at the heart of Vaughan Edwards' country house, Edgecoombe Hall, and the horror that dwells there.
In a departure from his science fiction roots, Eric Brown has written a haunting novella that explores the essence of creativity, the secret of love, and the tragedy that lies at the heart of human existence.

SYNOPSIS
It's dog eat dog out here. And man eat dog, and man eat man... Howling Mile. A city of the future. Barred from surrounding areas in the aftermath of a deadly toxic spill, its citizens are a crushed, hateful breed, slowly imploding in a vicious cycle of violence and cannibalism while their jailers, the Bordertypes, keep watch from sniper steeples and patrols of fire-breathing helicopters, desperate to prevent the contagion from infecting the rest of the country. Yet within this black arena, hope has come, at least for one woman. Carrier has fallen in love with The Dancer, a man she catches glimpses of beyond her reinforced windows and deep within her dreams. By day, she tends to her best friend Jake, who is dying, infected by the slow poison that is subsuming the city and its inhabitants. By night, she corresponds with Enderby, a friend who provides her with a reason to live, by sending her missives from the real world. Meanwhile, The Dancer introduces her to a different way of life in Howling Mile. She learns that there is beauty and magic beyond the bloodshed and resentment, that there exists a possible way forward. But she discovers there is a price to be paid for such epiphanies. Carrier finds herself running the risk of exposing herself and Jake to the Bordertypes, who don't want anything leaking out fro Howling Mile. Anything alive, that is. And all the while, it seems that the greatest secrets of the city are to be found deep within herself.

SYNOPSIS
When a UFO crash-lands in Elderton, Illinois, which reporter should the infamous tabloid newspaper The Astonished Eye send to cover the event? Why, Ben Savitch, of course! After all, Ben was born in this backwater town and that might just give him the edge when it comes to finding out the truth. And he might finally realise a shot-glass of fame and meaning in his otherwise lacklustre career.
But the mystery of the stranded extraterrestrial pales in comparison to the powerful yet fragile magic that already exists in Elderton: Almo Parrish can infallibly predict the moment when the first leaf of autumn will fall each year, and believes that he is the last surviving Munchkin; Chandler Quinn can build or repair anything (including otherworldly machines); little Vida Proust lumbers around town because the gentle inhabitants of Elderton are far too polite to tell her the truth of her existence (or lack thereof); and poor Frank Shepard is a flickering wraith of a man, a reanimated superhero who has forgotten how to fly.
As Savitch pursues his story, his homecoming coincides with unthinkable events that not only threaten the town’s tranquility, but also alter each intersecting life and transform the very fabric of reality itself.
The Astonished Eye was nominated for Best First Novel by the International Horror Guild.

SYNOPSIS

The Human Front follows the adventures of a young Scottish guerrilla, drawn into low-intensity sectarian war in a high-intensity future, when the arrival of an alien intruder (complete with saucer) calls for new tactics and strange alliances. MacLeod’s unique vision is developed even further in a new commentary written especially for this edition, and in his delightful personal account of a Hebridean youth’s first encounter with the post-capitalist world. Also featured is our Outspoken Interview showcasing the author’s deep erudition and skeptical, mordant wit.

The Human Front has pretty much everything you could ask from a great story: character, insight, plot, that quality of description that transports a feeling, sensation, incident or landscape seemingly direct from world to mind, and revelation. It has substance. It should make your mind reel, and work.”

SYNOPSIS
A moderately modern city, pulsing with music and commerce, seemingly of infinite length, yet only as broad as a wide avenue, flanked on one side by Heaven, on the other by Hell. Such is the milieu intimately familiar to — and mostly unquestioned by — the millions of average humans who inhabit the Linear City. Yet a small band of seekers do indeed ponder their odd lot, the genesis and fate of their strange habitation. Among the speculatively minded are a small group of writers who specialize in what they call “Cosmogonic Fiction.” And among these men and women we find Diego Patchen, one of the younger luminaries of his set. A Year in the Linear City is the story of Diego and his friends, their loves and rivalries, their failures and triumphs, during one pivotal year beneath the Seasonsun and Daysun, in forbidding sight of The Other Shore and The Wrong Side of the Tracks. Careers will flourish, comrades will part forever, subterranean adventures will endanger both soul and city, and a fateful expedition to far off Blocks will bring new and challenging perspectives, leaving no one unchanged.

All is not well in Lamentable Moll. A sinister, diabolical killer stalks the port city's narrow, barrow-humped streets, and panic grips the citizens like a fever. Emancipor Reese is no exception, and indeed, with his legendary ill luck, it's worse for him than for most. Not only was his previous employer the unknown killer's latest victim, but Emancipor is out of work. And, with his dearest wife terminally comfortable with the manner of life to which she asserts she has become accustomed (or at least to which she aspires)—for her and their two whelps—all other terrors grow limp and pale for poor Emancipor. But perhaps his luck has finally changed, for two strangers have come to Lamentable Moll... and they have nailed to the centre post in Fishmonger's Round a note requesting the services of a manservant. This is surely a remarkable opportunity for the hapless Emancipor Reese . . . no matter that the note reeks with death-warded magic; no matter that the barrow ghosts themselves howl with fear every night; and certainly no matter that Lamentable Moll itself is about to erupt in a frenzy of terror-inspired anarchy...

Rob Loomis has everything he could wish for: a beautiful girlfriend, a job he loves, a nice flat in London. Life is sweet—until the day that his mother rings him at work to tell him that his quiet, thoughtful and apparently contented father has hung himself from the banister of their family home. Before long, Rob finds that it is not only his own and his mother's grief that he has to cope with. A mysterious, hissing voice on the phone informs him that his father was murdered, and that his murderers—the uglimen—are targeting Rob as their next victim. But if Rob's father really is dead, why does Rob glimpse him, standing between distant trees, watching his own funeral? Is his father a phantom? A figment of Rob's imagination? Or has he somehow faked his own death in order to avoid some terrible retribution? To discover the truth, Rob must confront and accept shocking revelations about his father, must delve deep into his father's past, and in particular into certain events that occurred in California in 1969, during the fabled summer of love. For it was here where his father made the biggest mistake of his life, where his reckless actions were to have such devastating consequences that they would destroy not only his life, but the lives of all those around him.

SYNOPSIS
In the 1960s Jerry Cornelius was the coolest assassin on the Ladbroke Grove block.
By the 1970s The Condition of Muzak had won the Guardian Fiction Prize and The Final Programme was a feature film starring Jon Finch, Jenny Runacre, Hugh Griffiths and Sterling Hayden.
In the 1980s the world's first cyberpunk continued to inspire a generation of writers including William Gibson, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and bands like The Human League.
By the 1990s he was up and running towards the guns again in stories like The Spencer Inheritance, The Camus Connection and Cheering for the Rockets, which dealt with the ikons and key events of the day.
Now, in Firing the Cathedral, he responds to the attacks on America of September 2001 and their consequences, to the realities of global warming and global terrorism and, once again, the apocalypse has never seemed more terrifying, never been more fun. Cooler, sharper, his fingers firmly on the pulse of the 21st century, Jerry Cornelius is back, counting names and taking heads. And modern life will never feel the same to you again.

SYNOPSIS
For fans of classic horror fiction, the Not at Night series of anthologies is one of the genre's best-kept secrets. Beginning with the book from which the series took its collective name, first published in October 1925, literary agent and author Christine Campbell Thomson (1897-1985) edited twelve volumes which appeared from British publisher Selwyn & Blount during the 1920s and '30s. Now here is a superb new anthology inspired by Thomson's acclaimed series, in which some of the biggest names in contemporary horror present their own favourite stories and novellas which, for one reason or another, they feel have been unjustly overlooked or ignored. But be warned: these superior terror tales—both supernatural and psychological—will leave a lasting chill down your spine long after you have finished this book.

SYNOPSIS

Reconciliation, longing, and ambiguity combine in one astounding locale: Springdale. Is it a mundane New England town on a picturesque river, or the nexus of the paradoxical?
Springdale appears to be a quiet village, unblemished by shopping mall or mega-store. The town sits in a fertile valley, surrounded by countryside rich in natural wonder. Summers, tourists attend the area’s many arts and music festivals, and hikers crowd the trails. In the fall, reds and yellows of turning leaves decorate the landscape, and in winter, mountain resorts fill with avid skiers. But some say Springdale exists only on the contoured highways of our collective imagination. Others point to references dating back to Colonial Boston, to multiple versions of a ballad telling a story of remorse and disgrace. Here are three facts:

1. Maps cannot be trusted;
2. All History is awash with fraud and hoax;
3. Springdale is an absence of identity.

For two people, a lawyer named Patrick Travis and a television actor named Richard Shelling, Springdale is home and anti-home, a place of comfort and a distortion of everyday life. They are strangers to each other, yet connected. Their lives will intersect with a force that shatters both.

SYNOPSIS

Jupiter, magnified so as to fill half the sky, appears in the night sky suddenly. All the world sees it. From that night onwards, life continues as best it can under this sublime and overwhelming apparition in the heavens. People everywhere struggle to come to terms with what the apparition means, with how it can have happened. Is it portent of the end of the world? Or something more positive, something magical? Is it a freak of physics, or is it a message—and if so, how can it be decoded? For Stina Ekman, a frustrated poet and e-zine editor, this extraordinary omen seems to promise fearful and exotic changes for her blocked life.

Stina's narrative recounts the impact of this inexplicable event upon an ordinary life. All her life she has been fascinated by light and the effects of light on life; this enormous new fact in the sky forces her to confront the routines into which her life has fallen, the silence which has infected her poetry, the possibilities of existence itself.

This complex novella interrogates the way symbol and image govern our lives; the ways in which we attempt to bring meaning to the things with which life presents us; the balance we strive for between purity and admixture. It is an exploration the ways poetry, science and fiction might interact.

SYNOPSIS

Paul Girard is a morose ex-hippy working in a dead-end bookshop job and grappling with the mysteries of life. He’s expecting a quiet breakfast before the shop opens for business. He’s not expecting to be visited by a universe-hopping robot shrub from an alternate future, who offers him a ticket to all the parallel realities he can imagine in the form of a quantum yo-yo. Failure of a whole new order of magnitude awaits him.

How badly could you screw up when granted access to infinite worlds conforming to your heart’s most intimate desires? No matter how much of a botch you or I might make of such a miraculous gift, rest assured that Paul Girard, hapless middle-aged bookstore clerk, can hilariously surpass your worst fumblings and missteps. Visited one morning by a dimension-hopping artificial intelligence named Hans, Paul is given the ability to jump instantly to any world he can envision. But without truly knowing himself, Paul soon discovers that framing a wish that gets the expected results is not as easy as it first appears. From the depths of the Big Bang to a world where hippies rule; from a land of Amazons to one of where life is a video-game; from a society where cooperation means everything to one where individual chaos rules—across these bizarre dimensions and many others, Paul races in the search for happiness, love, wealth, status—and the answer to the Ontological Pickle. Acquiring comrades and enemies along the way, our feckless alternaut reaches a cul-de-sac from which the only exit is death. And then his adventures really begin..

Would you sacrifice humanity to save the planet Earth? Cole is an obscure professor at an undistinguished community college—a man without a future. Lee is a Chinese political refugee with a Texas accent—a man without a past. They share a tiny office, a taste for Edward Abbey (and Jack Daniels), and an awesome destiny.

For the most fateful decision in human history is theirs to make. One fateful Friday night, Cole and Lee join hands (literally) and embark on a journey to retrieve a formula that will change, or end, human history. A journey through Time. Along the way, they are witness to all the horror and all the glory of our tomorrows—from the cannibal seals of the next Ice Age to the final campfire under a dying sun; from the seductions of 30th century Paris to the pleasures of a dinner party a hundred million years in the future. They even find time to meet man's best friend, as well as his most indifferent enemy. It's a billion-year leap—a long weekend that stretches all the way from Friday night to the End of Time.

When dawn arrives the survivors count the cost. and Jack feels something calling him along the coast. He leaves the ferry and his father to venture into the wilderness, thinking that he can help but, in reality, sensing something far more malevolent luring him away. SYNOPSIS

A bookstore can be a wonderful, welcoming place of both commerce and curiosity. That's the goal for Woody, an American recently transferred to England to run a branch of Texts. He wants a clean, orderly store and lots of sales to show his bosses when they arrive from the States for a pre-Christmas inspection. Not easy given the shop's location in a foggy strip mall.

And things keep going wrong. No matter how often the shelves are put in order before the doors are locked at night, when the staff returns in the morning, books are lying all over the floor, many damp and damaged beyond repair. The store's computers keep acting up-errors appear in brochures and ads and orders disappear completely. And even when the machines are turned off, they seem to glow with a spectral gray light.

The hit-and-run death of an employee in the store's parking lot marks a turning point. One employee accuses another of making sexual advances and they come to blows. Between one sentence and the next, one loses his ability to read. The security monitors display half-seen things crawling between the stacks that vanish before anyone can find them.

Desperate, Woody musters his staff for an overnight inventory. When the last customers reluctantly depart, leaving almost-visible trails of slime shining behind them, the doors are locked, sealing Woody and the others inside for a final orgy of shelving.

The damp, grey, silent things that have been lurking in the basement and hiding in the fog may move slowly, but they are inexorable. This bookstore is no haven. It is the doorway to a hell unlike any other.

So what chance do a rootless musician and burned-out explorer have of surviving their entanglement with an ageless supernatural evil and the ruthless cult that worships it?

A chilling occult thriller from award-winning author Adam Nevill, Banquet for the Damned is both a homage to the great age of British ghost stories and a pacey modern tale of Devil worship and witchcraft.

The sixth millennium: An alien occupation of Earth has been thrown off. Now a ferocious new government called the Coalition is sweeping through the solar system, seeking out those who collaborated with the hated enemy. A handful of immortals, once collaborators, live on an ice moon called Port Sol, far from the sun. They govern a community of thousands of short-lived adherents. The Coalition's grasp will soon reach this remote place. The immortals must flee the solar system on vast starships - but they can take with them only a few of their followers. A young man called Rusel must choose between his lover, and his life; he chooses to flee. But Rusel faces a long journey, a journey that will last tens of millennia before the great ships reach their destination. Generations will live out their lives knowing nothing but the journey. Rusel agrees to accept an immortality of his own, to guide the ship and its evanescent crew across this desert of time. But as the years stretch to centuries and to millennia, the origins of the journey are lost in legend—and then the cruel scalpel of evolution begins to work on the crew. And Rusel lies on and on. This story is set in Stephen Baxter's acclaimed future history The Xeelee Sequence, as were RIDING THE ROCK (PS Publishing 2002) and REALITY DUST (PS Publishing 2000), whose events precede this new story.

SYNOPSIS

Things are going all too well in the city of Quaint. So well, in fact, that something has to be done. The zeal for goodness can be catastrophic, and no-one knows this better than Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, two stalwart champions of all things bad. For the innumerable citizens of Quaint, driven to neurotic distraction and overwhelmed with good living, desperation breeds nefarious bed-mates, and before long the two homicidal necromancers—and their beleaguered and substance-addled manservant, Emancipor Reese—find themselves ensnared in a scheme to bring goodness into disrepute, if not utter ruination. To Reese's bemusement, laudable motivations are, in a bizarre twist, uncharacteristically relevant to Master Bauchelain, although, of course, the payment of a chest filled with gold helps. Even so, sometimes, it turns out, one must bring down civilization . . . in the name of civilization.

But perhaps his luck has finally changed, for two strangers have come to Lamentable Moll . . . and they have nailed to the centre post in Fishmonger's Round a note requesting the services of a manservant. This is surely a remarkable opportunity for the hapless Emancipor Reese... no matter that the note reeks with death-warded magic; no matter that the barrow ghosts themselves howl with fear every night; and certainly no matter that Lamentable Moll itself is about to erupt in a frenzy of terror-inspired anarchy . . .

SYNOPSIS

What awaits us beyond the boundaries of death? What mysterious landscape, what punishing terrain? In this powerful new novella, Paul Park submits some answers, alternately menacing and absurd. Encountering an ape-man in the mountains of North India, and then returning to America to experience the death of his old mentor Jim Carbone, our narrator finds himself dangerously susceptible to the attractions of the afterlife. When Jim passes away, our young man follows him to bring him back, entering a harsh borderland of high mountains, lunatic monasteries, evil instincts, totalitarian coercion, incomprehensible cities, fascist police, and beautiful women. In the end, his only chance of finding his way home lies with his friend, who has receded away from him, and yet is still able to dispatch a messenger to help him one last time. Park is the acclaimed author of Soldiers of Paradise and Three Marys. Written with all of his customary imagination, poetry, and humour, No Traveller Returns is an exciting, meditative masterpiece, in which the impossible achieves its final triumph over the improbable.

SYNOPSIS

“. . . all at once, as if another light had been switched on, I saw the hidden picture. Within the contours of the island was a woman. A woman, naked, on her back, her knees up and legs splayed open, her face hidden by a forearm flung across it and by the long hair greenish, grayish that flowed around her like the sea.

“The center of the painting, what drew the eye and commanded the attention, was the woman s vulva: all the life of the painting was concentrated there. A slash of pink, startling against the mossy greens and browns, seemed to touch a nerve in my own groin.” —from My Death

The narrator of this creepy but feministically delicious novella, an early 21st-century novelist, decides to write the biography of Helen Ralston, an all-but-forgotten 20th-century novelist she has long admired. In the late 1920s, Helen studied painting with W.E. Logan. Logan painted her as Circe, and Helen painted herself as an island titled My Death. When they parted for good, both turned to writing. Willy became famous; Helen did not. The narrator of My Death intends to do something about that. But first she must solve the mystery of Helen’s relationship with Willy and why Helen titled her self-portrait My Death.

SYNOPSIS

Long ago -- when History was not as it is now -- the North African city of Carthage lay under the eternal darkness of the Penitence...
Ilario, a King's Freak from the minor Iberian kingdom of Tarraconensis, has been raised as both man and woman. Now Ilario is on the run—as a would-be painter. Ilario desires to paint neither symbols nor formal icons, but simply and scandalously to paint what is.
Carthage is the great capital of the medieval Mediterranean, existing under an aurora-stricken darkness—anyone who can paint under that light, Ilario thinks, must be taken seriously by the budding New School of painters further east in Rome and Florence and Venice.
But Ilario will not only encounter thieves, slavers, priests of the tophet, the Lords-Amir of Carthage itself, and a questionable eunuch book-buyer from the Royal Library at Alexandria . . . Murder is hot on Ilario's heels, following all the way from Tarraconensis—and the truth of the past is not to be denied.
Under the Penitence takes place in the Visigothic Carthage of Ash: A Secret History, but stands alone, and can be read without any reference to the novel.

SYNOPSIS
Mind the Hole. In a world of ozone depletion, toxic deadzones, internicine brew-ups and lifeless oceans, nothing has changed. Or so it seems, but in the break-away Lakota Nation, in the heart of a land blistered beneath an ozone hole the size of the Great Plains of North America, something is happening. Tracked by a growing global audience of online subversives and electronic muckers, a lone anthropologist wanders the deadlands, recording observations that threaten to bring the world's powers to their knees. Past and future; restless ghosts and rogue corporations; rad-shielded cities and unprotected peripheral populations; all now face each other, across a chasm once wide but growing ever narrower. Mother Earth is poisoned beyond any hope of resuscitation. Humanity beyond any hope of redemption—but one last lesson of life awaits. When Nature starts losing the game, Nature changes the rules. We've turned paradise into Hell, and in Hell, the Devil Delivers.

This third anthology inspired by Thomson's acclaimed series once again includes many of the biggest and most respected names in contemporary horror with some of their favourite stories, both classic and original.

SYNOPSIS

MONSTERS! ALIEN INVASIONS! SERIAL KILLERS! LOST WORLDS! CONSPIRACIES! MAD SCIENTISTS! SECRET HISTORIES! In the seventeen polished, ingenious and often darkly humorous stories collected here, multiple award-winning author Paul McAuley takes a fresh look at staple genre themes spanning science fiction, horror, and alternate history. In 'Residuals', written with Kim Newman, a hero who once helped repel an alien invasion, eaten up by self-loathing and alcoholism after his bruising experience in the eye of the media, must find it in himself to try to save the world all over again. Bestselling mainstream author Philip K. Dick confronts Richard Nixon and a conspiracy that has taken control of America in 'The Two Dicks'. 'All Tomorrow's Parties' is a compressed marvel of far-future science fiction that packs a novel's-worth of action into its story of how an immortal weary of everything the universe has to offer deals with an unexpected confrontation. A book-dealer turned private detective discovers strange and dangerous rivals making use of the internet in 'The Proxy'. A science fiction fan explains how he became a serial killer in 'I Spy', a story with a little something missing. And in 'Cross Roads Blues', especially rewritten for this collection, the course of American history hangs on the decision of an itinerant musician. Despite the wry black comedy that suffuses many of these stories, the author is fully engaged with the ineffable strangeness of the universe and the human predicament. Even at his most playful, as in 'The Madness of Crowds', where a TV set designer must deal with the ramifications of a discovery by a mad scientist who is also his younger, smarter brother, McAuley has a serious point to make about hardwired human behaviour. As Greg Bear notes in his introduction, although some of McAuley's work can be compared to a wild hybrid of Cordwainer Smith and E.M. Forster. Every one of these stories is different and distinctive.

SYNOPSIS
It gave the Empire its name, but the tiny island and city of Malaz is now a sleepy, seedy back-water port. However this night things are a little different. This night, its residents are bustling about, barring doors and shuttering windows. Because this night a once-in-a-generation Shadow Moon is due and threatens the good citizens of Malaz with demon hounds and other, darker, beings...And it was also prophesied that on this night the Emperor Kellanved, missing for all these years, will return. As factions within the greater Empire battle over the imperial throne, the Shadow Moon summons a far more alien and ancient presence for an all-out assault upon the island. Indeed the cataclysmic events that happen this night will determine the fate of the Malaz and of the entire world beyond.

SYNOPSIS

Paris, 1855. Jules Verne, struggling playwright and frustrated dreamer, finds himself whisked through time, first into the Cretaceous Period, and then into the far future, on a perilous quest to save the world from the tyranny of Robur, the insane Master of the World. Verne is famous for giving the world such classics as Around the World in 80 Days, Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. But what is not known is that Verne experienced an adventure equal to any he wrote about, a quest in which he met mad airship captains, beautiful rebels, and a race of ant-like aliens—and at the same time brought about the salvation of planet Earth and the dawn of a new Golden Age for humankind.

SYNOPSIS
When Mendeleev set forth the Periodic Table of the Elements, he revolutionised chemistry - but just as importantly, he planted the seeds for Michael Swanwick's Periodic Table of Science Fiction. Now, after their epochal appearances online at www.scifi.com, this collection gathers together the one hundred and eighteen stories of the PTSF in print for the first time, in their definitive form. Life, Chemistry, and Science Fiction will never be the same again.

Swanwick, grand master of the SF short story and absolute master of the short-short, is at his exuberant and ingenious best in these tales, each inspired by a single chemical element. Here are cosmos-spanning future histories, slyly conceived alternative timelines, shockingly subversive secret chronicles of intellectual passion, divine jests, and fragments of incomparable wisdom. In The Periodic Table of Science Fiction, revelations flow like heady wine: the real reason the Hindenburg exploded; how to measure the apocalyptic mood swings of God; why you never want pond scum to preside over your office; which is the most boring element in existence; how the Plains Indians adopted not the horse but the motorcycle; the best way to avert a spaceship hijacking; how to make a fortune in interplanetary metals prospecting; robot ideology; and much, much more. If Mendeleev encompassed all matter in his Periodic Table, Michael Swanwick's encompasses all that really matters...

With a new Afterword by the author, and an Introduction by Theodore Gray, winner of the Ig Nobel Prize for his Wooden Periodic Table.

SYNOPSIS

So they're telling me I need to talk about what I talked about in all these pages which had my bestest cover ever with green crayon and blue crayon because they're the only ones Glora Feeb hasn't eaten yet and bits of bark and moss and a dragonfly water beetle which is what they are before they crawl out and unwrap their wings, but it's only the shell because the dragonflies climb out through a hole in the beetle's back and then they dry up, which is what I'm going to do when I dry up too, climb out through the hole, I mean. And that's what was on the cover using LePage's glue, the white stuff that tastes like toothpaste without the mint or chili pepper if it's my sister's toothpaste when she's not looking because she's too busy staring at her new phone all the time, probably because it doesn't work, it's got no cord! But that cover's gone I don't know where maybe to the Smithsonian and I'd tied strings through the holes to keep all those pages in order, especially since I forgot to number them, only it's not real string it's five lb test monofilament fishing line that says 8 lb on the box but it's old and Grandma Matchie says fishing line that's old doesn't weigh as much as when it's new, not that I can tell the difference can you? Besides it's not like pages weigh a lot or fight back much. Anyway the pages I'm supposed to talk about got numbers now because grown-ups are obsessed with putting things in order but I'm not good at taking orders which is where all the trouble started so I'll stop now. the end.

SYNOPSIS

The calls on the radio are all about tunnels. Someone whose grandfather was involved in digging the first of the pair that take roads under the river says attempts were made to block up the excavations. The bosses accused the workmen of trying to prolong the job, but some of her grandfather's colleagues insisted the tunnel had been blocked from within. The wife of a worker at the sorting office on Copperas Hill reveals that the postmen are loath to use the tunnel that links the office to Lime Street Station. Perhaps it's a tale to frighten new recruits, since the veterans say the lights in the tunnel sometimes fail, unless they're switched off as a prank, at which point you may realise you have company that doesn't need to see you to find you, because you'll hear its whisper in your ear before you encounter its wet flabby touch...

Gavin Meadows gives guided tours of Liverpool. Some of his stories are based on history and some on local legends. As a summer of rainstorms and redevelopment overtakes the city, his research starts to disinter the true nature of the place. What originally brought settlers to the Pool? What used to take place in the cellars of Liverpool's Whitechapel? Why did Joseph Williamson, the Mole of Edge Hill, construct a maze of underground tunnels only to brick them up? What drove Virginia Woolf's uncle mad in Liverpool as he summed up a prosecution for murder? As Gavin and his partner Lucinda delve deeper they're confronted by the truth behind the legends and encounter what has always lived under the city. At the end, what will come up from the dark?

To do this he must brave personal threats and corporate intrigue and eventually centuries of star travel with one embittered companion.

Then, on a new, unblemished world he makes a decision which will change both their lives.
